President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu shared in a post on his official “X” account that the government will tackle the drug epidemic and gang-related crimes through legislative reforms today.

Due to the growing drug problem and rising gang activity throughout the nation, the government is proposing to amend the Narcotics Act. President Dr Muizzu noted that the necessary amendments will make it easier for state agencies to investigate and prosecute drug-related crimes effectively. The Parliament is expected to hold discussions on these amendments during this week, signifying the government' s commitment to protecting public safety.

Additionally, in the upcoming two weeks, the Government plans to present a new Gang Crimes Prohibition Bill in Parliament to succeed the current Gang Crimes Prohibition Act, which is primarily associated with drugs. The existing Narcotics Act contains limitations that obstruct law enforcement's ability to address these crimes; therefore, the Government aims to introduce the new Gang Crimes Prohibition Bill to facilitate more straightforward prosecutions and enhance the efficiency of the justice system.

As the impact of drug use and gang activities on communities has been rapidly increasing, these legislative measures demonstrate a wider commitment towards public safety and the welfare of Maldivians. President Dr Muizzu thanked Maldivian citizens in his post and remarked that a safer and more rehabilitative society can be achieved through the partnership between citizens and state agencies.
